First described by dr. james parkinson in 1817. Affects more than 1% of 55 year olds. Mendelian/genetic forms of parkinson disease are rare but important to help us understand what causes disease. Motor clinical features: tremor, rigidity and bradykinesia (slowness of movements, hands shake, short steps, tur(cid:374)s slo(cid:449)ly, ar(cid:373)s do(cid:374)"t (cid:373)ove when person walks, postural instability in later stages. Non-motor features: cognitive deficiencies, hallucinations, depression, raised anxiety levels, olfactory deficiencies (smell and taste) come before motor symptoms. Normal: black is the dopaminergic neurons that are stained in substansia nigra, projections to stratum. When neurons die, less staining because less dopaminergic neurons so do(cid:374)"t innervate striatum anymore motor symptoms. Striatum entry hook for basal ganglia which has a group of other brain areas that all work together and theyre responsible for modulation of brain functions (cognition goal directive behavior, cognitive flexibility, regulate behavior)
