Document Summary

Objectives: be able to describe the stages of development of the nervous system, determine the embryonic origins of adult brain structures. Folding of neural plate fold creates the neural groove. Anencephaly failure of caudal part of neural tube to close. Spina bifida failure of caudal part of neural tube to close. The neural crest is on either side of the neural plate. At about 19 days, the edges of the neural plate form neural folds that create the neural groove. The neural groove continues to deepen until the 2 sides meet at aspect and fuse to form a neural tube at 22 days. The neural crest develops between the neural tube and the ectoderm, but will later migrate to a new position. The initial joining of the neural folds to form a neural tube continues in a rostral and caudal direction until closure is complete.
