What is a spinal nerve: part of pns, mixed nerve carrying motor & sensory info btwn the sc and body, 31 pairs of nerve. Bony framework: vertebrae surround the sc, spinal nerves exit btwn the vertebrae at the intervertebral foramen, foramen btwn 2 vertebrae. Spinal nerve components: dorsal & ventral rootlets, dorsal & ventral root, spinal nerve, dorsal & ventral ramus. Dermatomes: area of skin innervated by the sensory fibers of a single nerves, spinal injuries, shingles (varicella-zoster virus) A 52 year-old male presents w itchy + painful rash. Suspects that this inflammatory rash due to shingles. What spinal nerve level most likely infected: l1, t4, c5, t10. Each terminal branch supplies a group of muscles w/in the upper limb. Clinical case 1 wrist drop: patient was in a car accident, cannot raise l wrist, what part of the brachial plexus is affected, posterior cord, axillary nerve, radial nerve, c5 & c6 roots.
