Introduction to muscular system: muscle structure and terminology. More than 700 muscles in the body, variety of shapes and sizes related to function. Example: arrangement of the fascicles into bundles: depending on the arrangement will dictate how they contract, circular, convergent, parallel, unipenate, bipenate, multipenate. Muscle terminology: origin and insertion (attachment) , prime mover (action) , agonist , antagonist , synergist ! Names of muscles always tell you something about: action or , location or , characteristics such as shape or relative size ! Antagonist muscle which opposes action: there is always a balance between one and the other side of the muscle, e. g. biceps (anterior) vs. triceps (posterior, also prevent from moving too quickly. Synergist muscle that assists action: e. g. biceps is aided by other muscles in the same area that help with movement (brachial radialis) Need to have a good balance between the agonist and the antagonist otherwise will have an exaggeration of the muscle that is working.
