Meninges are connective tissue coverings of the brain and the spinal cord, they are important for protection of the cns. We can see that the scalp and skull has been removed. First we have the dura mater, this is the most superficial, it is also the strongest and thickest. It has 2 different layers: periosteal adheres tightly to the skull, meningeal layer this invaginates (folds) into the cranial cavity at certain regions. Notice looking at dura, you can see blood vessels running within it, middle meningeal artery is important. Second layer is the arachnoid layer, this is deep to the dura, this is a thin fibrous membrane. Transparent membrane is the arachnoid, this spans the brain sulci, does not dive into the grooves, it passes over them.
