Document Summary

Review from last lecture - podocytes, filtration, basement membrane. Podocytes are epithelial cells with foot processes that interdigitate - the interdigitations are held together by a filtration slit diaphragm that spans the space between foot processes. Podcytes form the parietal layer of bowman"s capsule. The filtration slit diaphragm is made up of nephrin - keeps the filtrate in space - no filtration function. Cells located in between the loops of capillaries. Where line is is where the cortex and medulla meet - cortex above, medulla below. In the cortex there are two structures: renal corpuscles and convoluted tubules (two types - proximal and distal) The two types of convoluted tubules can be differentiated in section. Ts is shown in section - thin segment - has squamous epithelium. Parallel to loops of henley are capillaries and blood vessels - vasa recta - that receive material that has been taken up/removed from filtrate.
