When looking at the human brain from the outside, can see two structures: 1) cerebrum/ cortex, 2) cerebellum, during evolution, they grew so much in size when humans developed it overgrew other parts of the brain. Cut the brain open, see other structures: brain stem continues as the spinal cord down the vertebral column, big portions of the brain is the cerebrum and the cerebellum! Sticks close to the surface of the nervous tissue. This is the tissue that can be inflamed = meningitis. Since the 3 layers wraps the entre brain, the brain floats within the subarachnoid space with csf that is contained in the subarachnoid space. Common misconception: the meninges forms some form of the blood brain barrier: the meninges wrap around the brain but has nothing to do with the bbb.
