Fibroblast + mesenchymal stem cell = same appearance, not same function. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotential cells: can differentiate down several lineages. Mesenchymal cell found in collagen dense connective tissue. Produce extracellular matrix components: degrade by secreting enzymes and matrix proteases. Even within one tissue type, there are multiple different kinds of fibroblasts. Foxd1 lineage positive (flp) cells in adult skin. In the adult skin, you have populations of cells within the skin that have expressed the marker. Also have other cells that have never expressed the marker. The cells that make up the skin are not coming from the same place; not expressing the same genes. Idea that we have fibroblasts is inaccurate because there are multiple different cell types from different lineages.
