Ancient greek and latin provide the origins for most anatomical terms. Have to have a reference point- referenced based on the subject (ex. their left side) Pass through body which provide frame of reference in 3-d. Frontal plane: vertical plane; divides body into anterior/posterior. Sagittal plane: vertical plane; divides body into left and right. Transverse plane: horizontal plane; divides body into superior/inferior: also called cross-section. Body composition: 4 basic tissues: epithelia- skin, surface tissue. In general, classified based on cell morphology and number of layers: nervous tissue. Main component of brain, spinal cord, and nerves: muscle tissue. Contractile tissue controlled either voluntarily (skeletal muscle) or involuntarily (cardiac & smooth muscle: connective tissue. Proper: loose- functions as a binding tissue (ex. adipose tissue, dense- resists mechanical stress (ex. ligaments and tendons; deep fascia) Blood- transport medium for respiratory gases, nutrients and waste. Bone- supports and protects organs; attachment site for muscles.
