SOC-2107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Restorative Justice
Document Summary
John braithwaite wanted to investigate deeper into the conditions under which societal reaction increases crime or decrease it (theory on shame and crime): his main focus was on social control but it looked speci cally at shaming. The social context in uences whether shame will be disintegrative or integrative as well as on the degree. Japan and canada for example, both handle crime very di erently. Sherman recognized that sanctions both increase and crease crime, leading him to question what conditions have e ects on criminogenic behaviour. He created the de ance theory : it states there is an increase in the frequency and severity of o ences if the individual has a proud and shameless reaction to the sanction. He believed three factors increase o ences : lack of social bonds in a community, o enders do not see their actions as bad, only the sanction, a detail of stigmatizing shame due to pride and revenge.
