Terrorism
-Conservatives are the most concerned in the US about terrorism !
-2977 victims of 9/11!
How can we prevent terrorism?!
-strategy #1: default !
-The freak out strategy !
-Be afraid - (top fears, government corruption, terrorist attack, not having
enough $, gun control, people I love dying)!
-Be inconvenienced - (flights cancelled, people not flying, 15% decrease in air
traffic)!
-Invade other countries (war in Afghanistan, invading Iraq)!
-Discriminate against Muslims !
-“however beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results”!
-Not many more deaths post 9/11 OR less in the US and Canada (more worldwide)!
-Strategy #2: keep calm !
-psychology of Terrorists:!
-NEED: unfair humiliation (oppressive regime/group), desire to restore self-
worth, pay back !
-NARRATIVE: identify external entity to Balme for humiliation, justify
aggression against entity as a moral imperative (guilt reducing), simplify
thinking into black and white!
-NETWORK: friends who would od it too, make it normal, “brother in arms”!
