Chapter 32: list the characteristics that combine to define animals. Animals are heterotrophs that ingest their food. Their bodies are held together by structural proteins such as collagen. Nervous and muscle tissue exist in animals and are unique to them. They mostly reproduce sexually: summarize key events of the paleozoic, mesozoic, and cenozoic era s. During this time, dinosaurs were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates. The first mammals also emerged in this time. Cenozoic era: during this time there was mass extinctions of terrestrial and marine animals. This included the large, non-flying dinosaurs and the marine reptiles. Grade: a group whose members share key biological features. These animals have a dorsal (top) side and ventral (bottom) side. They also have a left and right side. They have the anterior (head) and the posterior (tail). Radial symmetry: there is an axis, and among that axis, the organism can be divided into similar sections in many ways.
