Fear= the physiological and emotional response to a serious threat (house is burning down, car coming at you quickly) Anxiety= a physiological and emotional response to something where we do not fully know the outcome (a big test, a movie) Both fear and anxiety are adaptive measures. 12 month prevalence (had anxiety disorder over past year): 18% Lifetime prevalence (had over entire lifetime): 29% Must be experienced for six months to be considered a disorder. Must experience three of six possible symptoms. Differential diagnoses: must be ruled out before diagnosing (drug effects, for example) Comorbid diagnoses: diagnoses that happen together (having one anxiety disorder may mean having another anxiety disorder) Gad is most common in western societies. Gad is more common in women than men (2:1) Sociocultural perspective of gad: a lot of things in our environment can cause. Gad to development (high crime neighbourhood, hurricane katrina, poverty). Black individuals are 30% more likely to develop gad than white individuals.
