Document Summary
Research methods: safeguards against error (tuesday october 4th, 2016 4:00-5:30 @302 leddy west - writing workshop) Cannot test hypotheses: naturalistic observation, case study. Can test hypotheses: self-report and surveys, evaluating measures. Naturalistic observation: watching behaviour: in real-world settings. No attempt at manipulation - not testing hypotheses. High external validity - ndings are generalizable to the real world. Low internal validity - ability to draw cause & effect inference (we still don"t know why) Case study: an inch wide but a mile deep : studying one or a small number of people for an extended period of time. Used to study rare brain damage or mental illness. Excellent for existence proofs, but can b misleading or anecdotal ; it can occur (ex. recovered memory) Not testing hypotheses, so still don"t know why. Self-report and surveys: self-report measures asses characteristics such as personality, interests, or mental illness. In order for these measures to be accurate certain protocol must be met:
