PHYS 1000 Lecture 7: Chapter 7 – Jovian Planets

18 views3 pages

Document Summary

Jupiter can be imaged well from earth, even with a small telescope (3rd brightest object in the night sky after moon and venus) Jupiter has many moons that vary greatly in size and properties. This was the only mission to launch a probe into a jovian planet. Cassini continues to explore saturn and its moons. When sending a spacecraft to far away planets we often take advantage of gravity assists" to get extra mileage/speed. We can speed up or slow down the probe, but direction will be changed. Uranus was discovered in the year 1781 by herschel; first planet to be discovered in modern history. Neptune was discovered in 1846, after analysis of uranus orbits indicated it presence (it caused small deviation in its orbit) Details of neptune cannot be made out from earth either. Most information we have about these two outer planets is from space exploration.
