PHIL 1120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Heavy Object, Sentenced
Document Summary
Consensus emerges at the end of dialogue. Two red things share redness but it isn"t possible to represent redness as a thing, only think of. Icons are physical things: a heavy object is an icon, a red object is an icon. Ideas are abstract concepts: mass is an idea, redness is an idea. Object of though (being) and (becoming) is an object of perception. Invisible realm is more real because senses can deceive us and alter our perception but objects of thought (ideas) are concrete and consistent. Math deals with objects of thought, not objects of perception. Truth is defined as agreement between phrases and facts. The republic deals with the popular conceptions of justice. Plato thinks that sophists/lawyers can make a weak argument appear stronger. Socrates makes an argument as to what justice is and tries to derive justice in the individual from justice in the state.
