NURS 1730 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Orthopnea, Pulmonary Embolism, Peripheral Artery Disease
Document Summary
Decrease in vascularity and increase in vascular fragility. Increased cervical concave curve to compensate for kyphosis. Lens fibres thicken and yellow = nuclear sclerosis (cataracts) Dental changes: receding gums, tooth erosion/wear & tear, loss of teeth, deterioration of old dental work. Atrophy of breast glandular tissue, decrease in breast size and elasticity. Limitations in range of motion/vision may inhibit bse. Decreased # of alveoli & loss of intraalveolar septa. Increased risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart failure. Calcification of vessel walls (arteriosclerosis) & stiffening of large arteries. Increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (dvt) and pulmonary embolus. Loss of lymphatic tissue & reduction in lymph nodes. Liver size decreases & decreased blood flow through liver. Slowed fecal passage in distal colon/delayed rectal emptying. Slowing of the motor system & atrophy/loss of neurons in brain and spinal cord. Progressive decrease in cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption. Rapid decrease in hormones at menopause (48 to 51 years)
