ESCI 2610 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Sustainable Development
Human Impact on the Natural System
Objectives in conflict in regards to water uses. Ex: a dam is used for energy
purpose, so water is let out. Another way to use water is for irrigation processes.
Big dams can cause problems. Dams are a barrier to sediments to the lower
base levels. This can have an impact on agricultural production. It exerts a
downward pressure. Bigger rainfall = more water in the water reservoir. Greater
chance that faults will be re-activated during a heavy rainfall because of the
large pressure increase. This is expressed in earthquakes. Structure of the dam
may be threatened during the precise period when it’s needed the most to
prevent water from flowing down the slope. This can also give rise to flooding.
Measures of effectiveness for structuring the decision problem: keeping project
costs down to a minimum, bring benefit to the local economy, paying attention
to public health, benefit to the environment, and making it politically
acceptable.
Sustainable development: what we want is for any project to bring benefit to
present generations in the area. But not at the cost of future generations.
Sustainability Indicators:
1) Beneficiaries understand and can apply technology
2) Beneficiaries contribute to the project design, the beneficiaries are
partners
3) Commitment of beneficiaries to own technologies able to monitor,
evaluate, and restore technologies
4) Access of beneficiaries to sustaining resources. Need money
FIRST TROPHIC LEVEL: PRODUCERS (Plants)
SECOND TROPHIC LEVEL: PRIMARY CONSUMERS (Herbivores)
THIRD TROPHIC LEVEL: SECONDARY CONSUMERS (Carnivores)
Increasing trophic levels: loss of energy and biomass. N – 20% biomass
Decreasing trophic levels: increase of energy and biomass. N + 20% biomass
