Focus: rational social norms, critique is not misguided claims but rather economic contradictions. Define moral breach and how it relates to social norms. Attacking norm one to create a breach and create a moral panic. Racialized (conventional) crime news: typified non-white folk devils, broader cultural stereotypes. New media and changing politics: resistances and challenges, the problematization of racial stereotyping. Hegemonic social order and counter-hegemonic breaches: competing narratives, community harms, blame allocation, dialogue and acknowledgement, compartmentalization. Theoretically there can be negative" moral panics (the traditional ones that criminologists so readily detect, expose, and criticize) but also positive" ones where we approve the values behind the panic" but not the label itself. It sounds considerably more sensible to talk of an approved crusade" than an approved panic. " but this would lose precisely the particular connotation of. Panic" that one wants to retain! (cohen 2011: 241). Suggested that moral panics could be good. Not just for humans but non-humans too.
