Kimberly, a woman on welfare, died (from heat, mental illness, suicide no one knows) at 8 months pregnant because she was receiving welfare the same time she was taking in student loans. Single mothers were understood to be lazy women who take welfare so they do not have to work and can instead drink beer and watch soap operas. Every year since 1950, the number of american children gunned down has doubled: false, real statistic was: the number of children gunned down in 1995 was double that of 1950, this is innumeracy. Numbers are great; they give us a handle on things. (objective reality a measurable answer humans can handle). Statistical data can be very useful but is not neutral. Successful social problems claims making can change the objective world. It can also change subjective interpretations of the objective world. Structural condition: the system is producing a large number of people who are dependent on the institution.
