PSYC 100B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Stereotype Threat
Document Summary
Dweck, 2006( growth mind set)- fostered belief that intelligence is changeable, bit it"s increased when effort rather than ability is encouraged. Made teens more resilient when frustrated by others. ( ability+ opportunity+ motivation= success) Agreed upon facts: - racial and ethnic groups differ in their average intelligence test scores. High-scoring people and groups are more likely to achieve high levels of education and income. Groups differences provide poor basis for judging individuals. Bias: environment, culture, and many other things lay bias into tests for different groups. Self-fulfilling stereotype threats: when a certain stereotype or idea inlays itself into what people think and believe. I. e. when racial groups are reminded of their races do worse on tests. Close to 1-5% of all research is actually being published-> academic bias. Stereotype threat: when women do worse on tests in which men are testing it, or when white scientists conduct intelligence tests on other races.
