Psychodynamic theories- posit that behaviour is dynamic interaction between conscious and unconscious mind. Humanistic approach- focus on inner capacities for growth and self-fulfillment. Social-cognitive theories- explore interaction between traits and social context. Id- pleasure principle, unconsciously strives for basic needs to be satisfied. Ego: operates on reality principle, seeks to realistically gratify impulses. Superego -societal values forced upon you, focus on ideal behaviour. Alfred adler-driven by efforts to conquer childhood inferiority. Carl jung-unconscious is the very source of creative impulse. More so thought of social and conscious mind. Researchers use self-report inventories and peer reports to assess and score the big five personality factors. These big five are-conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness, extraversion. These traits are predictors of mortality, divorce, and occupational attainment. Consistency of specific behaviours from one situation to another are weak, but average behaviours are predictable. I. e at any moment, a situation can powerfully influence a person.
