Defined as need or desire that energizes and directs behaviour. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: priority of some needs over others. Darwin- classification of many behaviours known as instincts; named, but did not explain behaviours. Instinct: fixed, unlearned pattern throughout species and some genes predispose some species- typical behaviour. Drive-reduction theory: suggests physiological needs creates aroused tension state ( a drive) that motivates. Homeostasis: tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state. Humans are motivated to engage in behaviours that either increase or decrease arousal levels. High arousal levels motivate engagement that will lower these levels. Low arousal levels motivate activities that can increase arousal, often through curiosity. At base, physiological needs, at the peak, self-transcendence.
