Introduction:
• Watershed, watershed and social relations with settlers and first nations
• Sovereign companies — HBC to enforce British settlement
• Crossing points from past trading points have been the basis of so many
conflicts between firsts nations and white settlers
• Pipeline problems, highway construction
• Most of BC does not have provincial treaty but federally it is acknowledge
1790 Spanish Nootka Treaties
• 1st European connection with political issues with first nations are with the
British and Spanish
• Nootka sound became a large trading post
• Even though it was FN land settlers made it clear they were the ones
to be in charge
• The made the trading post a settler trading post with FN goods
1821-66 HBC Lands; Stikine Rentals from Russia 1839+
• Stikine lands has now just become British Columbia
• Large trading rage means broad demographic of people — more goods, exotic
good, better long term trading
• 1846 Oregon territory divides — Vancouver island 1849 New Caledonia 1858
• James Douglas first lieutenant of Vancouver
Development in Two Colonies
• Supply routes North South along the coast of the US settlement faster
• Vancouver Island receives Legislative Assembly, separate appoints executive
and legislative council
• 1850 —Douglas treaty; state violence
• 1866 2 colonies are force back together by British => that becomes
British Columbia
• Grey area of when the North (Stikine) land joins New Caledonia
• Negotiations with FN were made (treaties)

• Racism turns after Douglas leaves
• 1858 + gold rush in Fraser Canyon, caribou, stickiness transient mostly white
population
• By mid 1860 gold rush ends debt is heavy which is why US found it hard to

• CP rails justified as a way to have a superior trading suite
• African Americans are the first to set up the first militia — after coming from
slavery they did not want slave drivers for running the country

over look the other problems and set yourself out of balance
