Speciation & systematics: speciation, speciation: the process in which new species form, there are many different concepts as to how to classify species, biological species concept: species are de ned by their ability to interbreed & produce fertile offspring. Not universally applicable (ex. can"t compare fossils & classify them on the basis of what mated with what) Microevolutionary processes (natural selection, genetic drift, mutations) begin after reproductive barriers appear. Chromosomes duplicate, but no mitosis occurs = sister chromosomes don"t separate into different nuclei = polyploid cell. Branching (linage) is de ned by a homologous ancestor.
