Semiotics: semiotics = the study of signs more importantly, the study of signs and the relationship between the signs and their relationship. Signifier is the part that sends the message. Signifier saying word tree (most basic lvl of a sign) Image of tree is signifier of 1 of 2 things: the real tree outside or a reference to a type of tree. ** signs aren t individual entities they re understood in relation to each other as they re different from each other. Pierce s philosophy understands signs as a triangle between 3 elements. Interpretant = the person who interprets the sign. Referant = what the sign refers to: could be an object, could also be an immaterial idea. Sign- vehicle = that which stands in for the object and interpreted by a person.
