VIC343Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Billy James Hargis, Consanguinity, Middle Ages
Document Summary
Context: we generally think of marriage as a religious ceremony. Marriage began as, and still is, a secular human ritual. It is the state that recognizes your marriage. In most western countries, the sacred places of worship tied to their respective religions have been given the right by the state to conduct the rites of marriage. The minimum age requirement was 14 for boys and 12 for women, If one had any disability that would impair a marriage, such as being mentally disabled and unable to fully and consciously agree to a marriage would limit you from choosing to do so. Impotency was considered a physical disability that would limit one from getting married. The inability to consummate the marriage in its entirety through vaginal sex would limit one from marriage. There were certain relationships that were also not allowed. Consanguinity was not allowed (the marrying of a blood relative).
