Performed during the yuan dynasty: some say even early than this dynasty even in the song dynasty. Song dynasty known form contribution to inventions such as gun powder, printing paper. Cost of paper was lower in the yuan dynasty allowed people to write stories. Paper accelerated the speed in which these stories spread. About 3 kingdoms fighting against one another for supreme power and unify. China: wei, shu, and, wei kingdom eventually succeeded in doing this. King of wei is described in this novel as mischievous and evil: smart but lacks humanity, occupied northern china first. Shu depicted as the positive kingdom in the story: leader was a descendent of an official in the han dynasty, smaller and weaker compared to the wei kingdom. When wei launched an attack, the other 2 kingdoms united and defeated the attack together. Each kingdom had a strategist (top military officer) who deployed the troops, assigned tasks to generals etc.
