Problems of peoplehood and nationhood arise the cover of language is pragmatic if you speak a celtic language you are celtic. Defending that there is something called celtic that can be categorized. Insular celtic---- goidelic ---- old irish ---- irish, gaelic, manx [all very similar] --- brythonic [welsh for british] --- old welsh, cumbric, s-w british ----- welsh, [at one point, goidelic and brythonic were very close/understood] Similar languages mean similar/connected cultures and exchange looseness of celtic identity. Words with common ancestors on the continent and insularly. Ancient and medieval metalwork similar filigree, design, etc. Large numbers of celts moving from the continent to the british isles little physical evidence tho . No celts left gaul, they just started speaking latin. Height of the roman empire england-area, but not past the wall or in ireland. Problem: britain was roman for hundreds of years but ireland never was common.
