Media evolution: evolved, not superseded by the new media. Medium matters; reading changes according to the medium used. All media have difference identities, languages, grammars, impacts. Relationship between physical material books and immaterial (screen) elements in our culture (tangible and intangible) Our culture is shaped by material and immaterial/intangible elements. New approach to knowledge (20th century): electronic revolution changed our approach. Paul otlet: mundaneum (1924): started conceptualizing the idea that there is a world repository . New technologies allow us to manage a huge amount of information. Information and different sources of knowledge can be connected. Knowledge belongs to the entire world need access. Vannevar bush: memex (1945): memory; retrieve and connect sources of information (revolutionary idea at the time) Ted nelson: xanadu (1960): making connections tangible -> advent of personal computer as a mass medium. Hypertext -> idea that the reader is part of the writing process in a sophisticated way.
