Document Summary
Text/message = key to understanding what is being said, not the medium. Message = more important than medium (message is the message) We choose one message over the other on the same medium -> medium isn"t as important - doesn"t decide what we watch. Some messages are repeated on the same medium but we perceive/interpret it different at different times/in different places (not the same message every time we encounter it) 4 types of texts: (everything falls into 1+ of these categories; usually a combination/overlap - no distinct categories) Pragmatic: practical information (i. e. newscast, weather report) - not designed to entertain you; to give you needed information. Expressive: artistic; designed to create particular mood or emotion (i. e. tarentino, Objective: creates its entire reality; complete fantasy that doesn"t reflect reality (i. e. animation, cartoon) Mimetic: designed to imitate life; be as close to reality as possible (i. e. real estate shows, cooking shows)
