SOC356Y1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Privacy, Operationalization
Document Summary
Privacy protection strategies on facebook: the internet privacy paradox revisited. The privacy paradox describes people"s willingness to disclose personal information on social network sites despite expressing high levels of concern. Why study social network sites (sns): first, snss represent a unique social sphere, where large amounts of personal information are stored and aggregated. Second, data provided on these sites can easily be copied, forwarded, replicated, and taken out of context. Users employ a wide range of privacy protection strategies to address their concerns (e. g. , untagging photos to more extensive deletion of content, to blocking friendship requests, and managing default privacy settings) Users are actively engaged in guarding their data and are not passive users as originally suggested. Factors are likely to motivate sns users to construct a private, protected profile (i. e. , a profile that can only be accessed by select sns friends) Students are more likely to have a private profile if their friends especially roommates have private profiles.
