Document Summary
Gender and age: the universal bases of social differentiation. Why do sex differences become gender inequalities: sex biological, gender social and cultural notions (masculinity and feminimity) Gender and role of choice in post-secondary education. Gallup/purdue universities surveyed 30,000 college grads of all ages. Outcome index measures graduates" satisfaction with their job. Also asked about satisfaction with their: relationships, physical health, community, economic situation, sense of purpose. Findings: where you go to school doesn"t matter much. Conclusion: don"t spend big bucks on a college degree. Took on a project that lasted a semester or more. Did job or internship directly connected to chosen field. Did not benefit if they were minimally involved in many activities. Study doesn"t tell us, but consider gendered educational choices (nurses, engineers) Engineering pays very well, nursing does not. Yet girls can do math too, only social difference (math scores only vary by country)
