People may move between layers (social mobility) in studies of sociological stratification. Others may study the distance between layers and how they change (ex. Students of stratification study (1) the everyday interactions that reinforce or subvert social hierarchies. (2) the movement of people between layers, (3) the distance between layers and (4) how the distance between layers varies over time and place. Studies show that women laugh more than men. Stereotypes and roles of gender govern their actions. At top of strata are people with wit are on the top and laugh the least. People think that we need inequality for society to function. Some argue that eventually we will become a classless society. A high level of inequality is inevitable and desirable (functionalism)
