Material/non-material culture: toolbox divided as material and non-material, material: physical/tangible creators of members of society. Technology as the knowledge, techniques, tools to allow people to transform resources. Important because our buffer against environment: non-material: abstract/intangible human creation that influence human behavior. Language, beliefs, values, rules of behavior, family patterns and political systems. Belief is a central component of non-material culture. Cultural universal: customs and practices that occur across all societies.
