Families = relationships where people live together with a commitment, form an economic unit and care for any young, and consider their identity to be attached to group. Emotional bond that connects people in a family -> grows (they"re there throughout development in life) Providing affection and companionship to family members. Nuclear family: 1 or 2 parents taking care of dependent children in their own house (immediate unit of parents and children); live apart from other relatives. Non-nuclear: multiple generations living under same roof; multiple adults care taking for the children. Traditional nuclear family: family where wife works without pay in home, while husband works outside home for money -> primary provider. Multiple arrangements over family; not the same in every culture; changes over time -> social construction of family. Families = socially constructed to convey the idea that families are not static, universal, or biologically determined.
