Gains made in the past 50 years for visible and non-visible minority groups. Vertical mosaic: canada"s ethnic groups = vertically arranged according to income, power, prestige - porter: people are able to retain identity and language, values, but groups = vertically arranged. Being a member of a group is associated with particular income, etc. Significant differences between groups and income, etc. Ethnic stratification (vertical) - some groups = higher; other = have harder time holding position. Melting pot analogy: throw all in there; some contribute, but can"t distinguish individual initial ingredient -> adapt to values/cultures of society and leave your own behind. Lautard and guppy compared 1971 and 2006 figures -> ethnic stratification = less pronounced. Decline in significance ethnicity occurred for occupational differentiation and stratification.
