Policing of sanction: modern attempt to maintain security through surveillance and the threat. By police majority but does not have to be by them. Rise of private police: enforcing religious practices, not government groups, contracted and paid privately, uniforms, might not work for security but those who see it will still prevent. Patterned social arrangements in society that are both emergent from and determinant of the actions of the individuals: economical patterns, stable over long periods of time. Examples of social structure: family, religion, law, economy, class, culture, geography, social and political institutions. Centralised single systems: one national police force is responsible for enforcing a single set of laws throughout the entire country (i. e. nigeria) Many different posts, all report back to one authority national.
