Broken windows theory: when there"s vandalism, littering, etc. , it means that social norms are not being maintained framed as causing deviance, ex. small forms of vandalism will eventually cause larger or serious types of crime. Problems with social structural theories: assumption of universality idea that there"s only one set of cultural norms / goals, assumes that deviance is more prominent in lower classes. Edwin sutherland (1883-1950: challenged the stereotype that crime was seen as a lower class phenomena, came up with the idea of white-collar crime. Containment theory: deviance is motivated by: internal pushed, ex. personality, external pressures, ex. poverty, external pulls, ex. deviant peers, a positive self-image and ego strength counteract these forces. Moral entrepreneurs: attempt to transform private troubles / issues to public issues, can be interpreted as socially regressive groups they have their own ideas about deviance enshrined in law, but there are also positive effects, ex.
