SOC210H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Peggy Mcintosh, Special Rights, Intersectionality
Document Summary
Positionality: linked to resources, privileges that come with resources. Privilege: special rights, advantages, and immunities automatically available only to people of a particular group, based on one"s collective positionality. Race and privilege: race grants different sets of privileges to different categories of people. Inherent advantages of being white: however, because whites are relatively privileged does not mean they are racist. It is a systemic problem not individual. In most cases, we are unaware of our privileges. I am privileged if : when i am told about our national heritage or civilization , i am shown that people of my colour made it as it is. I can choose make-up or bandages in flesh colour and have them more or less match my skin. If the traffic cop pulls me over, i can be sure i haven"t been singled out because of my race.
