SOC210H1 Lecture 6: Ethnicity Lec 6.doc
Document Summary
Today we will discuss racialized violence, with attention paid to o o o. Starting with an example: after the hunger games came out, there was backlash because people weren"t happy that a particular character was cast as black. People who read the book envisioned her being really innocent, and a black girl didn"t seem to correspond with this image. In the book, people grew to care about her and were upset when she was killed. However, in the movie, they lost compassion for her. This is troubling and it is tied to the idea of racialized violence. When you give a person a lower moral worth, their life is suddenly worth less. It shows that we don"t always place equal value on someone"s life (as we will see in the case of pamela george). Background: pamela george was a young aboriginal woman killed by two white 19 year-old athletes.
