SOC207H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Informal Sector, Gender Analysis, Canadian Pound
Document Summary
Discussing chapter 1 & 2 for this lecture. Industrialization in canada supplies britain with raw goods. It was late to industrialize in comparison to uk and us. The canadian experience: unique because it is a young country. Canada was still politically at a colonial state- a child to britain. Originally was agriculture dependent on fur, forestry and raw materials- 1867: canadian confederation- us companies started to relocate and settle in. Canadian places especially in south west ontario- exempted from taxes on the goods that were produced. Artisans and farmers were able to flourish for longer due to the delay of being replaced with machines and centralized manufacturing. The social and political transformations taking place under industrial capitalism in the 19th and early 20th century was enormous. Thus it is no surprise that many classical theorists of the day laced great attention on the study of work/division of labour to understand society"s problems- and solutions to these problems.
