I. e. newspapers, transcribed notes, social artifacts, tv (doesn"t have to be written) A product of its time, can indicate importance/significance of an issue, event or social phenomenon. Allows you to look at an issue longitudinally (over tome) Perusing data for categories/themes and meanings, systematically, by identifying similar strings of information with a code label. Find out what"s important in your interview before looking across. Best practice: start with a large number of codes and reduce from there. Codes have some substantive meaning (tell us more about our research question) Codes should have meaningful titles and be mutually exclusive from each other. Be cautious about writing about frequently occurring themes. Ground theory: using data as a start to develop concepts and theme. What are people doing? (or reporting they"ve done) Toward what are people orienting their thoughts and actions (motivation) What is the person saying (literal communication/implied meanings)
