Document Summary

Soc202h1s: notes for class 10 20 march 2017. Basics of association with categorical data: does race affect how people are treated by the justice system. Association: the distribution of one variable differs depending on the value of another variable. Knowing variation in the independent variable helps us predict variation in the dependent variable. Iv causes dv: empirical association between these variables does not necessarily indicate causation, require logic and theory. When we"re interested in examining whether there is an association between two categorical variables, there are three key questions we should consider: Than the association b/t biological sex and number of ovaries: anger with ovaries stronger. 2: there are tools used to formally quantify strength of association. When at least one variable is nominal, we can still talk about variables being associated, but (cid:498)direction(cid:499) isn"t an applicable descriptor. Example: a negative association with a reduced sample size (frequency = 50 for each age group)
