Document Summary

Cycle of inquiry: getting outside yourself, seeking information that you didn"t previously have. Cycle because it"s not finite, it"s an ongoing process. Study of social regularities: social research aims to find patterns of regularity in social life. Data: empirical facts, meaningless because it hasn"t been put in context yet. They become meaningful when they are presented or considered in relation to a theory. Theory is the ideal, and we"re contrasting it to the real world. Some theories have been proved to be false. Theory are normally generalization, when are they accounting for the whole situation. Theory in science is used in a more rigorous way. Theory is a way of seeing, a way of understanding and planning. Making generalization, relating to a new situation to an old one in order to discern patterns and figure out what is likely to happen. A theory wants to take different cases and put them together.
