Sociology is about connecting the dots between important social and political trends. Public issues are a widespread concern that link lives of individuals. Arise out of malfunctioning of society"s institutions. Ex. growing number of deaths from suicide and opioids. Used sociological method (founded on principle that social facts must be studied as things, and realities external to the individual) to explain suicide. Showed suicide had social patterning, so not purely psychological: karl marx. Wanted to use history to predict the future. Argues that capitalism creates two opposing classes, the bourgeoisie (owners of means of production) and proletariat (wage labourers: max weber. Argues that religion was one of the reasons why the economies of the west and east developed differently.
