Latent functions: connecting schools to society, historical changes in formal education, education and inequality: causes and consequences. Connecting schools to society: sociologists examine 3 main ways that schools connect to individuals/society, selection, socialization, social organization, these help sociologists provide structural explanations for patterns of enrolment, achievement, completion/drop out, and occupational trends. Selection: the process by which education systems channel students into different schools and programs (sometimes referred to as tracking or streaming) In this way, schools arrange students into groups on the basis of ability and teach them accordingly (in terms of content, pace, difficulty) Applying theory: which theoretical perspectives (cid:449)ould (cid:395)uestio(cid:374)/(cid:272)(cid:396)iti(cid:272)izes s(cid:272)ie(cid:374)(cid:272)e a(cid:374)d the (cid:862)o(cid:271)je(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e t(cid:396)uths(cid:863) (cid:449)e (cid:449)e(cid:396)e taught i(cid:374) s(cid:272)hool, post-modernism: there are only subjective truths, different people have different views on the world. Socialization: schools also prepare and shape students for the world by passing along values and knowledge. It is one part of the lifelong process of socialization: what this means for epistemology!
