Document Summary
The earth system is the complex interactions between the bio-, hydro-, atmos-, and lithosphere. The earth is made up of: crust. Very thin, with a tiny volume relative to the rest of the planet. Continental crust: average of 35 km thick, lighter colour, less dense, silicate minerals like al, o, si. Oceanic crust: average 8 km thick, iron, magnesium, denser, tends to be younger because constantly being subducted and emitted from spreading centers at mid ocean ridges, mantle. The atmosphere is defined by jeans velocity, or the velocity at which helium and hydrogen can escape the pull of earth"s gravity. The atmosphere is a fluid: experiences waves and tides, like the ocean, much of the material below the earths surface is liquid, too, but it is much more viscous and thus less subject to change. The atmosphere largely consists of (in order of decreasing abundance) nitrogen, oxygen and argon: there is about 400ppm of co2.
