The lithosphere is divided i(cid:374)to ~15 plates, so(cid:373)e have co(cid:374)ti(cid:374)e(cid:374)ts as (cid:862)passe(cid:374)gers(cid:863) The tectonic plates form a crust over a molten mass. What we see today as the continents is not what was there millennia ago. Most of the plates have a bit of ocean and have a bit of continent. We rest on the north american plate. But it also encompasses a bit of the pacific and atlantic ocean. These plates are shifting very slowly over time. At one point there was a huge continent called pangea but that has since separated.
