The users and makers perceive themselves to live in a vast network of power rela-ons; they are part of a social hierarchy. When we are familiar with the dominant assump-ons of a certain culture, we tend to regard the behaviour of people who act in conformity with those assump-ons as perfectly sensible, but when we have linle understanding of the beliefs of another society, many of the acts that rou-nely occur within it may strike us as absurd.
